Ohio State ASDA

Why should you join?

ASDA was established to connect, support and advance the needs of students pursuing a career in the field of dentistry. As a member, you have the power of organized dentistry at your fingertips.

The American Student Dental Association unites students from across the nation to fight for the future of the dental profession through advocacy initiatives that produce tangible results. ASDA represents almost 90% of dental students in this country with nearly 20,000 members. Thus, it is one of the most powerful professional student organizations and wields a great amount of lobbying influence. Members from Ohio State work alongside other students and practicing dentists to make an impact both at the state level as well as at the national level.

The Ohio State University ASDA chapter partners with the Ohio Dental Association to host our annual Day at the Statehouse where students from across the state work directly with practicing dentists to lobby for issues that directly impact dentistry. Additionally, every year Ohio Students gather with representatives from ASDA chapters across the United States to meet at our nation’s capital for National Dental Student Lobby Day. Once at NDSLD students receive training on how to effectively communicate the significance of the issues facing dentistry and then meet with senators and representatives to advocate on behalf of their fellow dental students.

Day at the Statehouse

While in Washington D.C. for National Dental Student Lobby Day, OSU joined with ASDA chapters across the country on Capitol Hill to lobby for the support of bills regarding student loan interest deduction and pro bono dental care. It was a great opportunity to learn about dentistry at the national level as well as network with other ASDA students and explore DC!

Community outreach is at the core of ASDA’s mission. We organize events in order to help others. Joining ASDA enables you to take your dental education further and work to make a positive difference through volunteering.

The American Student Dental Association provides its members with support by offering plenty of resources to help with everything from dental school tips to easing the transition into private practice. Our national website ASDAnet.org has countless articles and blog posts from fellow students across the country that help members navigate the stresses of dental school and even has useful financial advice. Additionally, the OSU chapter publishes a quarterly publication, 12th & Neil Magazine, that features pieces written by Ohio State students that includes useful and fun information on what’s going on around the school and the community.

The OSU ASDA chapter provides an invaluable clinic binder for D3’s as they make the transition from the classroom to seeing patients in clinic. This change can be stressful and overwhelming at first, but the ASDA binder has tips and advice that empower you to be successful in clinic.

Pre-dental students are an important part of ASDA. We have plenty of resources to help prospective students to learn more about life in dental school and how to be successful in the application process. One of our most popular events is our annual pre-dent day where we give people the opportunity to experience some of the lab work a dental student would normally do such as taking impressions, pouring up stone models, waxing teeth, and using a high speed handpiece. Participants also get to hear from a panel of Ohio State dental students and attend presentations by our admissions staff on advice for the application process.

All ASDA members receive free life and disability insurance as well in order to provide you and your family with piece of mind while you focus on achieving your goals.

Pre-Dent Day

The American Student Dental Association hosts events that provide countless opportunities for its members to engage in advocacy, leadership, and networking both at the chapter level as well as the national level. Members have the ability to travel to various national and district gatherings and conferences where they can meet and learn from the experiences of dental students across the country while also networking with current and future leaders in the field of dentistry.

Despite the numerous benefits that ASDA has to offer, I think that the networking opportunities it creates really set it apart from any other organization in dental school. It's not just getting to know the faculty on a more personal level, but also connections with upperclassmen and student leaders, as well as dentists from around the state that make ASDA invaluable.

Matt Kotapish

I am glad I joined ASDA because it has allowed me to meet upperclassmen and also people in my class whom I might not normally interact with. I also appreciate seeing how united students and dentists are at the state and national level and the opportunity to take part in these political discussions.

Joining ASDA also grants you membership into the American Dental Association and the Ohio Dental Association. This entitles you to all of the benefits that come with it. Through these partnerships we are able to host events such as our Advocacy Academy sessions that educate and empower students to impact the future of their profession. We also hold several lunch and learns that cover various interesting topics pertinent to dental students.
